WHEN it comes to spending some quality time with my boys, there’s nothing better than exercising our creativity and getting our hands dirty. With the newly acquired spring in our step that comes with the season, I thought it best we take inspiration from the uplifting elements of spring with this simple board game—Travel Bugs. Besides, there’s something quite alluring about the fresh air and that inspired the idea behind the board game. The goal was simple. We had to make the bugs meander across the board, on the assigned path and make them reach the flowers on the opposite side… all this with the help of magnets!
I found that this activity exercises a child’s hand-eye coordination. As the children set their gaze on the top magnet, the bottom magnet is moved by hand to make sure the top one does not lose course. While engaging their creative side, the game can also teach patience and perseverance, as it’s easy to lose control of the magnet if your concentration wavers.
Watching the children discover how physics infl uences everyday activities, and watching them play with magnets, was indeed an interesting experience. Don’t believe me? Try it for yourself! Besides, even if the game isn’t a success, creating happy memories of beautiful mornings, surrounded by the laughter of your children playing outside, definitely makes the whole experience worthwhile.
